02/03 Discussion Director Ch.14-17

Do you think Rue represents Prim, and do you think Katniss is unconsciously thinking of Rue as Prim?

From the moment Rue stepped on to the podium, I think Katniss has thought of Rue sort of like a sibling. If they were to ever fight each other in the hunger games, I think Katniss would just let Rue kill her because it would be like killing her own sister. Since Prim was the only person besides Gale that she cherished a lot I think she misses her a lot, and is using Rue to visualize that her sister is still with her.

We split up the questions so the rest are below in the comments

  1. @Ashley's Question:
I think Katniss sees Prim in Rue, kind of the same way as you can see your friends in a younger generation. She makes her feel like Prim is by her side again, even though she knows that she isn't really there.

    My Question:

If Katniss says most people can only withstand a few stings from Tracker Jackers and many go mad just from that, why do you think all of the tributes that got stung (besides the two girls that died) didn't go mad?

All I can really think of is they got lucky, that or Katniss was wrong about the tracker jackers being so nasty. From Rue's explanation, they aren't that harmful, either. I was really confused that the author added the details of how dangerous they are and then blew off the effects as something of lesser importance later on.

  2. to Shannon's Q: Yah I question that too since Cato was running straight for Peeta when he should have been delirious to what's going arouns him. But I partly think it's because the careers have been trained for this stuff, and Peeta could withstand more venom than a girl because he's got a large build.

  3. Ashley's Question:
I think that Katniss not only see's Rue as Prim, but also as a true friend. They rely on each other to proceed with the games and to help each other with their "homesickness". They remind each other of their siblings back at home which gives both of them a sense of hope.
    Shannon's Question:
I think the tributes who got stung didn't go mad because I think they were already insane before they got stung. I think it shows that the tributes have lost their humanity and their sense of being compassionate.
